Got back to the states last night – touch of the jet lag woke me very early this morning.
Found some time my last day in South Africa to get out of town and up into wine country. Many thanks to Jim and Ruen for the idea and for coming along. This is just outside of Bilton wine estate, looking back towards Cape Town.

After a meeting than ran a little late, before the next meeting, I picnicked here – drove over from Cape Town to Camp’s Bay. A twenty min drive well worth the view, and I went simple for lunch: sandwich, pepsi, and this view. I’m sitting on the beach here and got some great waves-crashing-over-rocks pictures to post some other time.

Arrived Cape Town, South Africa on a flight from Johannesburg this morning. This was tonight’s sunset from my view – just in front of the hotel as I was checking in – of Table Mountain on the left and Lion’s Head on the right.

Another picture from downtown Johannesburg. This is such an amazing place, full of people from all over the continent. Yet the contrast – the stark contrasts – stun me. We had lunch here, then went back uptown for the rest of the day.

These are the doors – almost 2 stories high – into the Constitutional Court in South Africa. The Court – equivalent to the Supreme Court in the US – is built on the site of an old apartheid-era court and prison. The bricks used in the main courtroom are from that prison. I wasn’t allowed a camera inside, but these doors are hand carved and represent the 27 rights guaranteed in the bill of rights. They’re written in the eleven official languages of the country.

In Chicago for a few days attending a conference. Hope to get out of the hotel a little and explore – with the camera of course. So far, I’ve noticed the pizza is better than expected and Michigan Avenue shops are not exactly in my price range.

My new lamp. Truthfully, it’s about 4 months old but until Sunday was desperately in need of assembly. Then there was an issue of conversion, changing the plug from Australian to US… but it’s together now and happily lighting a corner in the house.
