It’s Friday. It’s the first week of class. Everybody is wiped out. Thus, it’s pizza night at home.
Our local pizza place is awesome; the building was once an old gas station in the 50s. When they renovated, much of the old was retained. If you’re a regular, you might know the Men’s room door on the side of the building still works and leads straight in to the bar. You can save time on take out orders by skipping the front door.
Ours wasn’t ready when I got there tonight, so I had a minute to sit and wait. And a minute to take a photo of the sideways light across a door.
I love the paint on this door.
Recent acquisition – Joshua Tree, where Brian Eno and The Edge collaborate for soundscapes.
As sometimes happens, I got more than I bargained for when I hit the shutter release. I was shooting for the pond skater, but I got the pond skater and his prey. Every now and then you get lucky.
My grandmother’s recipe. The instructions include this: “give the batter 50x or so beats until it’s a good consistency, like heavy pouring motor oil – except in winter.” I grew up in a farming family. And I know exactly what she meant.
This is my first attempt at a Thai green curry with mushrooms, tofu, and basil. I give it about a 6 out of 10. Next time I’ll up the spices (more heat!) and add a few more vegetables. I wanted to keep this one simple and focus more on building the sauce. I’ll revisit this dish soon.
For the picture, I used an almost 10 year old Rebel XTi as it had the lens I wanted on it already and was close at hand. Sometimes, with supper cooking, kiddo asking questions, and end-of-day distractions… the camera already mounting the lens I want is the one I’ll use to shoot. I had a much newer camera sitting right next to it but mounting a long zoom. The dish was ready and we were about to sit down, so the lens – and not the camera body – dictated the shot. Still, I’m mostly pleased with the result. If I had the shot to take again, I’d dial the aperture up to about 2.2 or 2.5 and get a little more depth.
We had a huge storm blow up our last night at the beach. I had a lucky shot.

The milk is finished – “in my shark cup please!” – and the day’s done. His “green skateboard” forgotten until tomorrow morning; the house quiet at last.
Goodnight stars
Goodnight air
Goodnight noises everywhere….
And goodnight Little Bit. Can’t wait to see you on the morrow!
